This piece was created for a studio as part of a collectible figure lineup. The character is Laios Touden, from the manga Dungeon Meshi. The scene and pose were chosen by the client, based on the final chapter of the the manga, with small adjustments requested to better suit the sculpt as a standalone display piece.
Before this project, I had never heard of Laios or the series — but working on him was honestly one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling experiences I’ve had as a sculptor. I'm deeply grateful the client trusted me with this character. Not only did I end up connecting with the project technically, but I also found myself relating to Laios on a personal level.
His expression in this sculpt was intentionally kept neutral and blunt. It’s part of what makes him unique: even in dangerous or emotional situations, he reacts with a calm, almost disconnected demeanor — more focused on observation than drama. That trait is often debated by fans, with many interpreting Laios as potentially aspergian, which made the project feel even more personal to me.
The figure was modeled with 3D printing and presentation in mind. My focus was on:
Silhouette clarity and form readability
Realistic weight and material separation (especially between fur, cloth, and armor)
A pose that felt strong, but not overly dramatic — in keeping with Laios’ personality
The fur cloak is one of the standout areas, with layered flow and texture variation to support both visual interest and printability. The armor strikes a balance between stylized design and physical plausibility. Rendered using Arnold, with a neutral lighting setup to preserve the character’s shapes and material transitions. The cuts and pegs for this collectible were made by @caiocardoso.art.
